The oval shape of the chamber is characteristic of the Kouy's furnace. This is were the ore and the charcoal smelt into bloom and slag.
Slag
The liquid slag flows into the pit.
Bloom
When the fire reaches the 1100°C next to the tuyeres, the slag becomes liquid and the iron turns into a spongious mass.
